Installation and Maintenance Practices for Solar Panels

Digital MAAS • Feb 14, 2020
Renewable energy and solar panel installation are becoming an advantageous option for homeowners and businesses across Australia. Over the past decade, solar panels have become cheaper thanks to recent technologies, and solar energy solutions have become more efficient and accessible.

Sure, finding the proper equipment that meets your energy needs is a major key to finding a sustainable way to power your home or business. But proper solar installation and maintenance should equally receive your care and attention as they are vital to making your investment last longer.

To best utilize your solar panels, it is important to consider these practical installation and maintenance practices:
  • Placement. When installing solar panels, the roof is the best option as it directly faces the light source and can get maximum exposure. Ground mounting, however, is also a common and good option in some locations. Just remember, solar energy systems should be mounted at open locations where there are no shades that can obstruct the sunlight and prevent your panels from generating energy.

  • Accessibility. Another thing you should consider when installing solar panels is its accessibility. Put it in a location where you reach it without difficulty when it’s time to maintain or repair it. You might also want to set it at an angle where you can observe its indicators and see if it’s working.

  • Cleaning. The good news is that solar panels need not much cleaning. But if your panels might accumulate dust and dirt over time, water and non-abrasive soap and sponge can already do the trick.

Cleaning solar panels at least twice a year is an effective and easy way to increase your panel’s efficiency but if you’re unsure about how you should clean it, you can always make a quick look at the manual or check with its manufacturer before using any product or washing it.

  • Maintenance. Luckily, solar panels are not very hard to maintain. Yey! Panels are designed to not have moving parts you won't have to worry about rust, re-lubricating hinges or any complicated and time-consuming work.
Installing and maintaining your solar panels, if done right, can increase its efficiency and longevity. But remember also to monitor your energy usage regularly so you would have some information to compare to in case you notice that something’s not right. Don’t hesitate to call your solar energy company for professional installation or maintenance in case you don’t have the ability and time to do it.
